NSW: Children orphaned in overnight crash

SYDNEY, Aug 8 AAP - Three children were orphaned in a car crash on the state's roadsand two other people died in separate collisions overnight.

NRMA Careflight said its medical team had flown the children, also injured in the crash,to hospital in Sydney, following the crash at Cooks Gap, about 20 km north-east of Mudgee,in the state's central west.

The parents died in a head-on collision and four others were injured - including the children.

Police said the accident occurred around 7.50pm (AEST) on Cassilis Road, when a gold-colouredNissan Pintara sedan travelling north collided with a dark blue Mazda Coupe.

The man and woman in the Nissan, both believed to be aged in their 40s, suffered fatal injuries.

Two of the children, the boys aged three and 10, and their sister, 13, were airliftedto Westmead Hospital in a serious condition, with the youngest child believed to be critical.

A 35-year-old man was airlifted to Dubbo Hospital with a fractured leg.

A driver also died on the NSW south coast overnight, police said.

Near Sussex Inlet, on the south coast, a northbound Toyota Hi-Lux crossed to the wrongside of the Princes Highway at Jerrawangla, about 10.25pm (AEST) and collided with a southboundMitsubishi.

The 40-year-old man driving the Toyota was trapped in the wreckage, where he died,an ambulance spokesman said.

The 42-year-old man driving the Mitsubishi suffered leg injuries and was taken to ShoalhavenHospital for treatment.

In Sydney's east, an 85-year-old pedestrian was killed at Rose Bay, police said.

About 8.20pm (AEST), a Toyota Corolla hatchback driving along Old South Head Road andabout 50m south of Faraday Avenue was involved in a collision with the pedestrian as hecrossed the road.

The pedestrian suffered major injuries and was taken to St Vincents Hospital, wherehe later died.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers.
